It never fails when I meet with potential customers I hear how painful their existing video conferencing rooms are to use. It is a common complaint due to the fact that these video rooms have a control system with all of these buttons to control the video system, lights, blinds, DVD player, Cable or Satellite TV, multiple inputs, etc. Some rooms even have multiple control devices such as separate remote controls for the video system, TV and DVD. The control system is so complicated that end users refuse to use the technology in the room and as a result the video conferencing adoption rates are very low.
The good news is Cisco has a way to simplify these video conferencing rooms. All Cisco video endpoints are controlled by the same Touch 10 user interface as seen below. The touch 10 provides a simple user interface for one-touch calling, meetings, contact directory, content sharing, camera control and layouts.
The Touch 10 also has a feature called in-room control that allows not only control of all the video functions listed above but also control of room elements such as lights, blinds and climate control. Presets can be configured on the Touch 10 to provide control of video, lights, blinds, etc the single touch of a preset. This provides a simplified single user interface for all the video conferencing features as well as room element control.
How it works: You need a Cisco video system with a Touch10 user interface, and a third-party control system, for example Crestron, AMX. The video system’s API, referred to as the xAPI, is the link between the video system and the control system. Use the events and commands exposed by the xAPI when you program the control system. The simple drag-and-drop in-room control editor offers a library of user interface elements, referred to as widgets. You can use these widgets to create your own in-room control panel for the Touch10 user interface.Together, all of this provides a powerful combination of the control system’s functionality and the user-friendly Touch10 user interface.
